Oxford boys injured in chemical explosion
OXFORD – Two Oxford youths playing with flammable liquids were severely burned and airlifted to medical facilities Thursday night.
The Oxford Police Department is investigating an apparent explosion that happened at the Community Apartments off Chenango Street in the Village of Oxford.
At around 9:01 p.m. Thursday, a loud explosion was heard near the apartments. Oxford fire and emergency crews responded to the scene and found two young boys injured. Police believe the two boys were playing with a bottle of “nitro fluid” which is commonly used in radio-controlled racing cars.
The fluid contains nitromethane, methanol and some non-petroleum lubricants. The substance is very poisonous and highly flammable.
Police believe the boys may have retrieved the material from a dumpster, but are still investigating the source and attempting to locate the owner of the nitro-fluid.
One youth was airlifted to Syracuse University Hospital’s Burn Center by helicopter, with severe burns to his body. The second youth was transported to Wilson Hospital and later taken to Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse with severe burns to both legs.
