Oxford makes plans for bicentennial
OXFORD – An initial organizational meeting to work on ideas for the 2008 Oxford Village Bicentennial celebration took place on Aug. 28. Held at Six On The Square, it was attended by Trustees of the Village Board; as well as the Mayor Terry Stark; Town Supervisor Lawrence Wilcox; and representatives of town groups. It was co-chaired by Trustees, Dale Leach and Joe Spence. The main purpose of the gathering was to generate enthusiasm and spread the word to all the community groups to “get involved.”
The time period suggested for the celebration was a kick-off in April then running through July 2008. The main events will be planned during the dates of July 21 to July 27.
The three main objectives of the Village Bicentennial Celebration are to:
1. Recognize the long history of the Village of Oxford.
2. Educate current generations of residents of their role in continuing to build on the history of Oxford.
3. Implement a celebration that favorably impacts the historical and visual image of Oxford and continues to portray the village as an appealing place to live or work.
Suggestions for the event covered a dance, visiting dignitaries, bands, parades with floats, fireworks, a block-party picnic, reenactment groups (Civil War/ Native Americans/ black powder frontiersmen), walking and horse-drawn wagon house tours, photo exhibits, Oxford memorabilia exhibit, a student art show, a photo contest, a postal commemorative stamp, time capsule burying, and even a Festival of Farms. Printed commemoratives are planned such as: post cards, a 15-month (4-color) calendar, a chronology of happenings book, a pictorial book, a proclamation done in calligraphy, and a special bicentennial logo to tie it all together.
One original Oxford Bicentennial logo design will be chosen for use, created by any Oxford school student, resident, or Village/Town taxpayer. Decisions will be made by the Village Trustees. Further details regarding design entries will be forthcoming.
Much sprucing up of the Village is planned such as plantings, a carved sign, improvements to parks and the ballfields, and restoration of the Washington Park pagoda and the LaFayette Park bandstand.
Everyone agreed that all events should be family friendly and multigenerational. Activities will have to be scheduled to avoid duplication or conflicts. For convenience, information will be available to all on the www.OxfordNY.com website.
Whether you enjoy looking back at history past or creating modern history, all ideas are welcome! There’s only one chance at making this bicentennial spectacular – your involvement could make a difference. Help is needed with planning, coordinating and implementing independent or joint projects with the village or other organizations.
