Greene has answer to first divison loss

Greene 4, Vestal 0
GREENE – The Trojans answered their first division loss earlier this week with a shutout victory over longtime foe Vestal Thursday.
Christine Conroe set up one goal and finished off the Trojans’ scoring with one of the team’s prettiest goals this season. Taking a crossing pass from Andrea Day, Conroe fired a one-timer into the cage. Day also had a goal and Holly Davis finished with two goals in the win. “We started off sluggish and then kind of got it together,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “Christine’s stickwork was great tonight and she just makes things happen. The play she scored on, I couldn’t have drawn it up any better.”
The Trojans’ defense did not allow a shot and held a 15-0 advantage over the Golden Bears.
Greene plays defending sectional champion Maine-Endwell on Wednesday.

Boys’ Soccer

Greene 3, Norwich 1
OXFORD – Greene averted Norwich’s upset bid with two tallies in the second half to pull away from the Tornado and advance to the finals of the Oxford Tournament.
Norwich’s Jason Woodard scored on a penalty kick at the 35-minute mark of the second half to knot the game. Fifteen minutes later, Craig Hebbard provided a spark for the Trojans netting the go-ahead goal. Mark Day added the third tally with 5:47 to play to give Greene breathing room.
“Norwich came out and played hard. For a young team they showed a lot of heart,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “We weren’t ready to play at the start and maybe we were still disappointed after the loss to Delhi. Hebbard played well for us all game and seemed to motivate the team.”
Greene plays Oxford or G-MU Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the title game.

Ryan Devine, Ryan Huggins, and Chris Golata had goals for the Redskins, who held a 24-5 advantage in shots.

Girls’ Soccer

Norwich 2, Greene 1
OXFORD – Norwich advanced to the Oxford Soccer Tournament finals for the second straight season beating Greene Thursday night.
Elma Borcilo figured in both Norwich goals scoring off a direct kick from 30 yards out in the first half. Borcilo set up the second goal sending a through ball to freshman Hannah Killean, who touched the ball past the keeper for a two-goal lead in the second half. “Our defense has been better because they’re getting more of a chance to rest,” said Norwich coach Jeremy Bolton. “The offense is possessing the ball more and we’re getting more shots.”
Megan McDermott tallied for Greene in the final five minutes.
Norwich (3-5) plays the winner of Oxford and G-MU Saturday at 5 p.m.

WALTON – The Storm won their second 1-0 decision this week and extended their winning streak to seven games Thursday at Walton.
Jessica Lorence scored the game’s lone goal at 29:53 of the first half with an assist from Sarah Hutchinson. Emily Sugar made two saves for the shutout in goal.
“Our defense has been solid this year and Emily is aggressive at keeper,” said UV coach Chris Bieniek. “Everyone on our offense has the ability to score. We spread it around, and that makes us a more dangerous team on offense.”
UV (5-1, 8-2) hosts Sidney on Saturday.

WHITNEY POINT – With a victory already at hand, Greene saved its best team performance for last setting a new school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay against Whitney Point Thursday.
The team of Samantha Clink, Maureen Buck, Helen Zaengle, and Lizzy Buhl timed a 4:02.03. Buck set the tone for the race, said head coach Mike Platta, with a personal-best 100-yard split. “I’ve never seen a person win a race from the second spot,” Platta said of Buck, who was singled out along with teammate Jayne Vermaat by Platta. “Those two had the types of efforts tonight that turned the energy of the meet around.”
Lizzy Buhl also set a new school mark timing a 25.68 in the 50-yard freestyle. Helen Zaengle and Katie Crowe also picked up a pair of wins for Greene, who now have 16 straight meet wins to improve to 5-0 on the season.

Brittany Barnes had three kills for Norwich, who play at the Johnson City Tournament Saturday.

Jacob Kelly and Frank Somich led Norwich (3-6) shooting 40 and 44 respectively. Ryan Cambron and Eric Walling fashioned matching 46s, and John Mattingly carded a 50.
Norwich competes in the STAC Championships Wednesday at Genegantslet Golf Club.

AFTON – Brock Rowe and Josh Fisher sizzled on the back nine at Afton Golf Club shooting a combined three-under-par in Thursday’s win over B-G.
Rowe was at two-under-par 34 to lead the way, while Fisher was one back at one-under-par 35. The victory boosted Greene’s seasonal log to 6-2 on the season.
Jesse Abildness shot a 39 to pace B-G (2-7).

 OXFORD – Oxford defeated Sidney by a 3-2 count for the second time this season, and kept its hopes alive of a MAC division title.
Erica DeWispelaere and Shelby Myers won at singles for Oxford, while the doubles team of Megan Phinney and Olivia Powell added the third team point. All of Oxford’s wins Thursday were in straight sets, while Sidney’s two wins came in three sets.
