Norwich makes right adjustments
CONKLIN – A bending Norwich defense stiffened at the right time, and a persistent Tornado offense that stuck to what it does best wore down and broke down a game Sus Valley club Saturday afternoon in a 20-6 road victory.
Mike Moon ran for a pair of short TD runs in the second half to break a 6-6 halftime tie and pull Norwich into a tie for second place in Class B’s Division III along with Chenango Valley, and one game behind division leaders Chenango Forks and Windsor. “This was probably our best defensive effort of the season,” said Norwich coach John Pluta. “We gave up some big plays, but we made the big stops when we needed them.”
Norwich took advantage of great field position early in the third quarter getting the ball at the SV 25 to regain the upper hand over the host team. On the previous sequence, Norwich punter Justin Ballin pinned the Sabers inside their own five, and the Tornado defense promptly held setting up a short TD drive. Moon converted a short fourth-down run to the 15, Jesse Prosser hit the SV defense for a 10-yard gainer, and Moon plunged five yards for six making it 13-6.
Late in the third, NHS (3-2) embarked on another scoring drive ignited by a 32-yard Prosser scoot. It was a Moon three-yard TD run in the early stages of the fourth stanza that had the Tornado in command by two touchdowns.
The Sabers marched quickly toward their second score after Moon’s jaunt getting first downs on three straight plays, the last an Eric Novobilski run that was bolstered by an NHS face mask penalty. In a first-and-goal situation, Norwich successfully defended four plays, the last three errant Novobilski passes.
A little trickery had SV deep in Norwich territory again late in the game. An option pass by Chad Starzer to Tyron Smith after getting a handoff from Novobilski put the Sabers deep in Norwich territory. NHS junior Vaughn Labor picked up a big 11-yard sack of Novobilski on second down, and Tim Clark knocked down a fourth-down pass in the endzone to end the scoring threat. “Micah Brooks, Christian Hotaling, Tyler Slater, and Alex Wlliams had big games for us on defense,” Pluta said. “We made a couple of adjustments (on defense), and putting pressure on the quarterback was a key.”
In spite of giving up 188 yards passing, most of those came in the middle of the field, and the Tornado harrassed SV’s two-quarterback system of Novobilski and Starzer into six total sacks.
Early on, Norwich’s offense went nowhere leading to a pair of three-and-outs. It wasn’t until the second quarter that the Purple Tornado picked up its first first down of the game. With just under seven minutes left in the half, Chris Mattingly broke off a 14-yard run and followed that with a 45-yard ramble to open the scoring. Mattingly finished with 108 yards rushing to push him over the 500-yard mark this season. “(Sus Valley) was in the defensive scheme we thought they would be in, but it’s a little different trying to practice for that,” Pluta said. “Once we were able to figure out what they were taking away from us, it gave us other options. We started getting the ball on the perimeter, then we were able to go back inside.”
Sus Valley used the passing game effectively in the second quarter to move for its lone score A big screen pass from Starzer to Smith for 54 yards set up Starzer’s nine-yard scoring pass to Mike Banko to knot the count.
Norwich plays at unbeaten Chenango Forks (5-0) Saturday.
