Sherburne woman publishes first children’s book

SHERBURNE – Writing was always a dream for Lynn Morris. Since she was a child of 12, she dreamed about being a published author. Now, years later, with the publication of her first book “Don’t Eat Your Broccoli!” Morris has achieved that goal, and this weekend she will hold a book signing at First Edition in Norwich.
Morris, a busy mother, says she wrote the book in pieces. She would write a sentence or two at different times, while waiting to pick her kids up from school or during practice. After the course of an entire school year, the book had been created.
“Don’t Eat Your Broccoli” is a story about a young girl who does not want to eat her vegetables, but after hearing her older sister tell her not to, her ideas begin to change.
“I got the idea from my kids,” Morris said. “Kids are funny. You tell them not to do something, and suddenly they really want to do it.”
After submitting her book to Log Cabin Books in Hamilton and hearing that they would be interested in publishing her story, Morris contacted Sherburne-Earlville High School senior Joe Mettler.
“In a book for kids this age, the illustrations are so important,” Morris said. The author contacted three different people, but Mettler seemed to be a good match. “His ideas for the illustrations were so close to what I had pictured, that it was easy to work with him,” Morris said.
At the beginning, Morris said, they thought 16 illustrations would be needed to complete the book. When it was completed, they had nearly double that amount.
This weekend, Morris will be signing copies of her book at the First Edition Bookstore, located at 13 South Broad Street in Norwich. The signing will be held from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
“This is different than anything I’ve ever done,” Morris said. “It was a really educational experience for me.” The Sherburne native said she hopes her accomplishment will encourage others to achieve their goals. “Don’t ever give up on your dreams, because you just never know,” Morris said.
“Don’t Eat Your Broccoli!” is available at bookstores throughout Central New York as well as stores and shops of all kinds in Chenango and Madison counties. It is also available on Amazon.com, and on the publisher’s Web site at www.logcabinbooks.us.
