Canastota 40, Sherburne-Earlville 23

WATERVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville returned the opening kickoff 95 yards, and it was all downhill from there, said S-E coach Mick James.

Canastota pulled away from a tight contest with three touchdowns in the third quarter to open a two-point lead to 15.

“We gave them some great field position with fumbles,” James said. “We were winning the line of scrimmage, but we kept giving them the ball back. When they had the ball, they mixed their offense nice with the run and pass.”

The Marauders finished with just 161 yards of total offense, but had the return game working. In addition to Billy Northey’s 95-yard TD return, Tyler Blinebry had kickoff returns of 74 and 50 yards, and the Marauders totaled 300 return yards for the game.

Four lost fumbles and 70 yards of penalties conspired against S-E’s offensive success. Northey scored on a 16-yard run in the third quarter, and junior Nate Kline had a four-yard TD plunge in the fourth.

S-E finishes 2-7.
