Registration next week for Norwich youth wrestling program
NORWICH – With the intention of building strong kids and strong teams for the future, organizers of the Norwich Youth Wrestling program say they’re expecting a big turnout when they unroll the mats next week.
“Our goals is to get 100 kids signed up,” said coach Tim Scheer.
He hopes there’s even more, because he believes the program offers a number of benefits to area kids.
“This program can really help all kids,” Scheer said. “It teaches respect for others, builds discipline, develops motivation and it keeps them active, that’s so important.”
The program begins Thursday, Nov. 8 with registration in the Norwich High School wrestling room, located just off the gymnasium. It’s open to all youth in grades kindergarten through sixth grade that reside in the Norwich City School District. There is no cost to participate.
Interested youths in grades kindergarten through third grade will register at 6 p.m., while youths in grades fourth through sixth grade will sign up at 7 p.m.
Practice will follow immediately after sign-ups, so kids are advised to be dressed in proper attire upon arrival – that means sneakers, athletic shorts, and t-shirt (singlets preferred, but not required).
Regular practices will be held from 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursday for grades K-three, and kids in grades fourth through sixth practice from 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 6-7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Head gear will be provided for those that want it.
Scheer believes the program can also boost kids’ confidence. “It’s the camaraderie of it,” he said. “Being around each other, competing and developing those bonds at a young age, makes these kids feel good.”
Participants will have the option to partake in 12 to 15 weekend tournaments by the time the program ends in March, Scheer said. The tournaments usually cost between $14 to $18 per wrestler. Scheer added that wrestling can also help kids develop skills in other sports.
“Wrestling teaches balance, agility, and can offer benefits to kids in any sport they play,” he said.
