NORWICH – Firefighter I students representing agencies from across Chenango County get their first taste of live fire at the county training center in Norwich on Saturday. Supervising the students are instructors and safeties from Greene, Norwich and New Berlin. During the training which runs from early September to early December and meets twice a week, the 18 volunteer students will learn the basic fire ground procedures from seemingly simple tasks such as donning gear and breathing apparatus to water supply to interior search and rescue operations and fire suppresion. After graduation, these firefighters will then be able to take more advanced coursework in skills such as auto extrication, ladder and pump operations, arson investigation or hazardous materials handling.
