Jail renovation costs improved

NORWICH – Tthe Chenango County Board of Supervisors committed to a $2.7 million renovation project of the former jail and safety buildings into county offices Tuesday.

The building located on West Park Place in the City of Norwich will be separated into two structures. Demolition of the century-old jail cells, along with exterior and interior renovations are planned.

The scope of the project began with only demolition and exterior work estimated to cost about $2.3 million. However, the Department of Social Services agreed to partner with the county for $400,000 worth of interior renovations. DSS will later reimburse the county for the amount.

Finance Committee Vice Chairman Dennis Brown, D-Pharsalia, said he predicted that the final cost for all renovations would be lower.
