Jive with Djug Django’s Gypsy Swing at 6 On The Square
OXFORD – 6 On The Square is proud to present Central New York’s premier Gypsy Swing band, Djug Django at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. “Gypsy Swing,” also known as gypsy jazz, is an energized music form. With the feisty passion of gypsy music coupled with big band swing and improvisations, they’ll have everyone in the mood to swing jump and jive.
Djug Django got their name from Jean “Django” Reinhardt, one of the most renowned jazz guitarists of all time, and the father of “Gypsy Swing”, dating back to the 1930’s. Uniquely essential elements necessary for his jazzy swing sound were violin and three guitars. Django, who played rhythm guitar along with his brother and a cousin, was the star soloist in his band.
Today, Gypsy Swing lives on through the incredibly multi-talented members of Djug Django. These gifted musicians are Dave Davies on guitar, trombone, high hat, and vocals; Harry Aceto on guitar; Bernie Upson on upright bass; Doug Robinson, vocal & guitar; Brian Earle on clarinet; Eric Aceto on violin and Jim Sherpa on washtub bass. Their list of musical talents and credits are far too long to list, but collectively they have played around the world and all the way to Carnegie Hall. Together these artists are Djug Django, performing classic Gypsy Swing compositions by Django Reinhardt, originals by Dave Davies and the best of the Blues Age.
