EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report provides updates on major construction projects in Chenango County.
The Book Man, Wholesale Books and More:
• Interior shelving, general clean-up and other improvements are nearly complete at this 1,000 square feet book store and craft consignment business south of the county’s seat on state Route 12.
• The Book Man opens Friday, according to owner/operator David Munroe of Bainbridge. The building is adjacent to the Rainbow Redemption Center.
• The store will carry children’s books, cook books, and a wide assortment of craft and hobby books, in addition to locally made crafts.
Employment stats:
• The Chenango County Office of Employment and Training reported a 4.2 percent unemployment rate in October. The figure compares to 4.5 percent in September, and 3.8 percent in October of 2006.
• Last month’s reported unemployment rates in Chenango’s neighboring counties were: 3.5 percent in Otsego; 3.8 percent in Madison; 3.9 percent in Delaware and 4.0 percent in Broome and Cortland counties.
Housing Starts (modular, double wide and stick built):
• Chenango County Codes Enforcement reported the following new housing starts in October: one each in the townships of Afton, North Norwich, Preston and Sherburne. There were two in the town of Plymouth.
Nina’s Pizzeria & Restaurant:
• The 1800s era building that has housed Nina’s Pizzeria & Restaurant since 1975 was dressed last month with a fresh coat of paint, new lights and awnings.
• Owner Andy Nicastri said, weather permitting, that the building’s southern portion would be painted by springtime. “I’m part of the Merchants Association, it’s part of making downtown look good,” he said of the privately-funded project.
