Oxford Police Department may be getting a new vehicle for Christmas

OXFORD– The ball has been slowly rolling towards the Oxford Village Police Department’s goal of acquiring another police vehicle, and now it seems, they may be on the verge of getting it.
The department has received a state grant for $25,000, which was lobbied for by Senator Thomas W. Libous, R-Binghamton.
“At first we were looking at getting a Chevy Tahoe, but the cost was getting into the thirty thousand range, and the village thought that was too much of a burden on the taxpayer. The current vehicle we are looking at is a Dodge Durango, four by four, which runs about $21,050 plus equipment costs,” said Oxford Police Chief Richard Nolan.
After the cost of installing a protection cage and computer system, the total will rise slightly above the $25,000 grant.
“To get a brand new police vehicle and just be over by $500 or so is still a great deal to local taxpayers,” said Nolan.
The department has two vehicles, but only one is recognized by the Oxford Village Board, and subsequently, the village will not pay for anything but simple repairs and insurance costs.
“Its breakdown is imminent, and once it does, that will be the end of it,” said Nolan.
The currently used older vehicle is a black 1998 Chevy Lumina with about 100,000 miles on it. “The vehicle has obvious signs of corrosion, the muffler is getting worse, torn seats, and we had to replace the alternator to keep it going,” said Nolan
A second car would help the department receive grants from New York State such as seat belt safety, DWI and aggressive driving campaigns, which require a set amount of participation. “The grants will pay for another officer to be on duty without any cost to the taxpayer. Without another vehicle, it would be very difficult to participate,” said the chief.
Oxford’s newest police cruiser is a 2004 Impala which was also purchased through a $20,000 grant received from the federal government. Nolan says he is actively searching for similar aid in getting a second vehicle.
The department speculated a final arrangement could be made within a month or two and the vehicle would be on the road before the end of winter.
