Weekend storm: Could've been worse
NORWICH – The Nor’Easter that was expected to slam Chenango County with up to a foot of snow over the weekend, dumped significantly less than was originally anticipated. Although a wintery storm did drop between five to eight inches of snow on parts of Chenango County, the one to two feet that some meteorologists predicted were happily not seen this weekend.
“The storm was a bust in terms of snowfall,” said City of Norwich Emergency Management Officer A. Wesley Jones. On Friday, Jones had explained that if warm air moved into the area, the accumulation could take the form of sleet or freezing rain instead of snow. “That’s exactly what happened,” Jones explained, saying that if Sunday’s rain and sleet had taken the form of snow, there would have been a lot more accumulation.
“What happened, was that it kind of turned into two storms. One Saturday night, and one Sunday night. We picked up a moderate amount of snow, but nothing major,” Jones explained.
While a winter storm warning was in effect for all of Chenango County and the surrounding areas throughout the weekend, Jones said the National Weather Service started to get indications that the storm wouldn’t be as bad as expected late Friday and early Saturday.
Despite the lower snow totals, rain and sleet caused hazardous and slippery road conditions, and winds topping 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts of 40 to miles per hour caused snow drifts and decreased visibility Sunday night through early Monday. “Luckily most people heeded our warning to stay off the roads on Sunday,” Jones said. While there were a few accidents, no major injuries were reported.
While this winter storm left the county relatively unharmed, Jones explained that more severe weather could be coming. “There’s nothing written in stone yet, but there is the potential for more storms in the next couple of weeks,” Jones said, explaining that the storms were part of a pattern based upon the jet stream.
