Purple matmen pinned by Windsor

Windsor 52, Norwich 15
NORWICH – Windsor used the pin to its advantage sticking seven Norwich opponents en route to victory over the Tornado Tuesday night.
Norwich’s Teddy Jerome put his team on the board at 160 pounds with a tight 2-1 victory over James Webb. Josh Smith (171) followed that up with the host club’s lone pin. “I think our lack of mat time on this level of competition takes over,” said Norwich coach Terry Hagenbuch. “I tell the kids all the time that I’d rather see them win ugly than lose pretty.”
In one of the meet’s most exciting matchups, Jon Wallace of Windsor won a 24-15 decision over Norwich’s Eli Hodack. Hagenbuch said there were near falls for both wrestlers, “all over the place.”

NEW BERLIN – B-G/Afton’s overall lineup strength paid off late in the match as the Bears won the final six matches to pull away for the win.
Kris Stafford (160) started the string of wins with an overtime decision over UV’s T.J. Brownell. The Bears’ Danny Gormley (112), a state qualifier a year ago, finished off the Storm. “We kind of figured we would give up some of those last matches,” said UV coach Jim DuVall. “They have a solid lineup from top to bottom, and their kids all wrestle tough.”
The Storm sprinkled in a pair of surprising victories to garner an early advantage. Todd Wilcox (145) won by pin, and Zach Montgomery (152), just an eighth-grader, also nabbed a pin flooring the Bears’ Brad Hurlburt. “Wilcox has wrestled Parsons (Paul) a lot, and he usually has the upper hand, but the pin was a surprise,” DuVall said. “Zach winning at 152 is kind of shocking. We were hoping to get a win, but to win by a pin was big.”
