Greene 43, Unatego 38
WELLS BRIDGE – Greene coach Bill Case, who has over 400 career victories, could not recall a better late-game comeback than his team’s dramatic win over Unatego Saturday afternoon.
Down by six points with just over a minute to play, the Trojans’ pressure defense forced four Unatego turnovers in a row to remain unbeaten in MAC league play. “I’ve never seen our girls so happy because it looked like we were going to lose,” Case said. “It was a subpar night for us in a lot of ways, but we didn’t lose our composure the whole game and the girls believed they could win.”
Colleen O’Hara buried a three ball for Unatego with just under 1 1/2 minutes to play making it 38-32.
The Trojans began their prodigious comeback on Liz Wentlent’s basket. Megan McDermott had a steal out of the Trojans press, and scored to make it 38-36. The Trojans forced another turnover and got the ball out of bounds under the Unatego basket. McDermott scored another layup tying the game with 17 seconds remaining.
Barb Borst stole the ensuing inbounds pass, and instead of calling a timeout, hit the go-ahead three-pointer. Following Unatego’s missed opportunity to score at the other end, Greene forced a turnover after a missed shot, and Borst gathered the board. She hit two free throws to seal the win.
McDermott led Greene with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Borst pulled down 12 rebounds, and Erin Smith finished with 11 points.

NEW BERLIN – A defensive switch in the second half turned the tide for Sidney, who overcame a nine-point halftime deficit with a big third quarter Saturday.
The Warriors remained in a zone defense, but the adjustment was to a trapping one-three-one zone. “I wish there wasn’t a halftime,” said UV coach Brandi Backus. “The end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter was the best I’ve ever seen us play. When they went to a different zone, we didn’t handle it well. We didn’t turn it over, but we didn’t get good looks at the basket.”
Dani Gravel and Kate Philpott each had six points during a 16-3 third quarter. Gravel led her team with 18 points.
UV trailed by eight points early before finishing the first quarter on an 11-0 run to lead by three. Hannah Johnson scored 13 points for UV, who have now dropped two straight games. Cierra Izard added 12 points.

HARPURSVILLE – Hannah Kimmel and Alycia Kimmel combined for 55 of their team’s 69 points as the Hornets avenged a close loss to the Blackhawks last month.

Hollyann Branham had six points in the last quarter, and Alyshia Crawford nailed a three ball with six seconds left to tie the game and force overtime. “We got away from the press in the first half because they were breaking it easily in the first half,” said Oxford coach Brad Aldrich. “We got better results with it in the fourth quarter, and crawled back into the game.”
During the extra period, Hannah Kimmel hit the last of her five three balls, and on the ensuing possession, Alycia Kimmel converted a traditional three-point play to up the Hornets’ lead to eight points. Alycia Kimmel scored 26 points and was 10-for-10 from the foul line. In two games against Oxford, she made 24-for-24 from the charity stripe.

Greene wins third straight MAC title
GREENE – Greene extended its reign atop the Midstate Athletic Conference winning its third straight team title Saturday afternoon at home.
The Trojans, who have not yet tapered to yield best times, set two meet records including Patrick Kelsey’s 2:20.26 in the 200 individual medley, and the 200-yard free relay team of Chris Osterwald, Ryan Schultz, John Flanagan, and Josh Lee that clocked a 1:41.33. “Even the events we didn’t win, we placed three others to score depth points,” said Greene coach Mike Platta, whose team has not lost a dual meet to a league opponent in well over five years. “We didn’t taper because we wanted to save our best times for sectionals. We feel we have a real shot at Lansing after finishing second the last two years, and our depth gives us a real good opportunity.”
Kelsey had three total gold medals for the Trojans, and Chris Osterwald picked up an individual win in diving as did George Flanagan in the 100 breastroke.
Sherburne-Earlville’s Andrew Ashton set two new MAC tourney meet records winning the 50 freestyle in 23.82, and the 100 butterfly in 1:00.93. “I was really glad to see that (from Ashton),” Platta said. “Sherburne-Earlville is improving, and the improved competition will push us to improve as well.”
