Old State Highway 23 Bridge to be removed
PLYMOUTH – The Chenango County Public Works Committee passed a resolution this week authorizing the abandonment of the Old State Highway 23 Bridge in the Town of Plymouth.
The bridge, situated over Canasawacta Creek on the west end of Old State Highway 23, was built over 60 years ago. At the time the bridge was part of State Route 23. However, over the years, New York State Route 23 was reconstructed and realigned, excluding the half-mile portion now known as Old State Highway 23, and drastically reducing the number of cars traveling over the bridge.
Old State Highway 23 is a small side road with access to State Route 23 on both ends. Currently approximately 21 people a day travel over the bridge. If abandoned, those who use the bridge would have to travel an extra half mile to the east end of Old State Highway 23.
