VHCA and Cortland split championships
On Friday evening, the culmination of the ESCAL regular season tournament saw Valley Heights Christian Academy of Norwich and Cortland Christian Academy both playing in the final game.
In the girls’ game, VHCA took care of business defeating the CCA girls, 40-21. With that win, the girls team from Valley Heights won their eighth consecutive ESCAL tournament championship.
The boys’ team wound up on the wrong side of victory as they fell to CCA, 51-44.
Hannah Vidler led all scorers with 18 points as Sarah Miedema backed up Vidler with 12 of her own in the Crusaders’ win.
Leading 24-8 at halftime, the VHCA ladies put it into overdrive as they coasted to another championship. "I thought that we played inspired." coach Lee Hodge said. "It's tough to beat a team three times in one season, but our girls really stepped thier defense up and played well."
The boys team got out of the gates early leading Cortland 20-17 in the first quarter. Roger Rose netted 10 of his game- high 18 in that first stanza. Rose then went ice-cold as he was held scoreless in the second and third quarters before hitting one field goal and 6-for-6 on the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
"We got into some early foul trouble," VHCA's Hodge said. "I thought that the officiating was a little one-sided, however we can only blame ourselves. We got beat on the boards and gave up way too many second chances. You can't give them second chances - they're too good."
The foul trouble Hodge was referring to was when Roger Rose received his third foul and point guard Ryan Rose got his fourth – all in the first half.
Valley Heights now looks to prepare for the NPCA Invitational Tournament in Pennsylvania on March 6-8. Both teams will be in action and hope to make a deep run in the tournament
