S-E captures three section titles
NORTH SYRACUSE – Sherburne-Earlville set a new school standard crowning three sectional champions at the Section III, Division II Wrestling Tournament at Cicero-North Syracuse High School this past weekend.
Greg DuVall (112), who was a titlist at year ago at Unadilla Valley, won his second crown, Chris Pike (285) repeated as the heavyweight top dog, and Wheeler Brunschmid (171) pulled one of the bigger surprises coming from the fourth seed to earn his first section title.
Brunschmid avenged a semifinals loss in last week’s Class B tournament to Jordan Jerome of South Jefferson to reach the finals. Once there, he rallied for an exciting 8-5 win over Watertown IHC’s Brian Piarulli. “Wheeler was in a cradle for about a minute and a half in the second period, and he fought out of that to get a reversal,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks of a move that put Brunschmid up 6-5 over Piarulli. “The other kid chose neutral in the last period, and Wheeler was able to get the takedown.”
Brunschmid started the season at 160 pounds, but moved up to 171 as the S-E coaching staff foresaw an easier road to a section title. “The LeBlanc kid from Morrisville-Eaton is probably one of the top ten 160-pounders in the nation, and we wanted to move away from him,” Hicks said. “Wheeler bulked up to 171 pounds, and it obviously paid off for him.”
Pike won a 6-5 decision over Cato-Meridian’s Austin Lee in a rematch of last year’s heavyweight final. Pike improved to 31-0 on the season, and Hicks antipicates a better result in two weeks. “Last year, Pike was more of a 215-pounder who moved up in weight, and he caught a bad draw,” Hicks said. “Now he is a legit heavyweight.”
DuVall grabbed a 6-4 overtime decision over Dan Waltz of V-V-S. It was just the third loss this season for Waltz – two of those to DuVall. The junior S-E grappler scored early in overtime with a outside single-leg takedown.
Alec Sheddon (103) added a fifth-place finish for the Marauders, who were seventh in team scoring out of 35 schools.
The New York State Wrestling Championships are slated for March 8-9 at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.
