Oxford stages “Kiss Me Kate” this weekend
OXFORD – The Oxford High School Drama Club will present Cole Porter’s “Kiss Me Kate” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Oxford Academy Performing Arts Auditorium.
“Another Op’nin’ Another Show” welcomes you to Baltimore and to the opening of a musical version of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew.” A play-within-a-play unfolds, where each of the four main cast members’ on-stage performance is complicated by what is happening in his/her off-stage life. Fred takes the ‘Shrew’ roles of director and male lead, Petruchio - and is played by Geoff Sheldon. His ex-wife Lilli, now a movie star with a reputation for being difficult to work with, plays Katherine, the shrew - and is played by Erica DeWispelaere. Fred’s current love interest. Lots, plays the role of Bianca - played by Felicia Tynan; and the other man in Lots’ life. Bill, plays the role of Lucentio - played by David Allen.
As the story develops, the intertwining of on-stage and off-stage lives presents complications such as the signing of a $10,000 IOU by Bill, but in Fred’s name; two gangster thugs who appear to make good on the debt, but approach the wrong person; the realization that Lucentio (Bill) may not marry his love Bianca (Lots) until Bianca’s older sister Katherine, (Lilli) the shrew is married off; Petruchio (Fred) arrives looking for a wealthy wife and is not scared off by Katherine; and the rekindling of the romance between Lilli and Fred.
