Four local wrestlers place at New York State tournament
ROCHESTER – Three Chenango County wrestlers reached the New York State Wrestling Championships semifinals, and Greene’s Tyler Beckwith finished in the runner-up position in the Division II 171-pound division to lead the area contingent Sunday night at Roche
The fireworks began in the final minute of Beckwith’s matchup with Cody Hutcheson of Section IV when Hutcheson picked up two takedowns, the last with under 20 seconds remaining to earn a 4-3 decision. It was a one-step improvement for Beckwith, who was third a year ago as a freshman.
B-G/Afton’s Kris Stafford (160) and Danny Gormley (112) placed fourth and sixth respectively in the D-II championship, and Gormley dropped three straight after reached the semifinals, while Stafford had to wrestleback to a place position after losing quarterfinals bout Saturday.
Chris Pike gave Sherburne-Earlville its first state place-winner in 20 years reaching the D-2, 285-pound semfinals before a pair of losses and a forfeit win gave him a fifth-place showing.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a place-winner, so it was nice for Chris,” said S-E assistant coach Brian Hicks.
More details on the tournament will appear in Tuesday’s Evening Sun.
