NORWICH – Mary Mayo directs the Norwich High School mixed choir in practice for Tuesday’s spring concert, being held at 7 p.m. in the NHS auditorium. The program will feature the talents of the jazz ensemble, treble choir, concert band, symphonic band, and mixed choir. This year’s special program will feature the mixed choir performing the works of the late composer Moses Hogan, whom Mayo worked with previously. “Mr. Hogan's passion was to preserve and promote the Negro Spirituals,” Mayo said. “What moves me most about these negro spirituals, which grew out of slave work songs, is that they express such wonderful hope and joy, even though they were composed during a tragic and unspeakably difficult time in our nation's history.” The choir will be giving a second performance of this program for district music students at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. That performance is open to the public as well and will last approximately 45 minutes.
