Fund drive begins for state Sheriff's camp
CHENANGO COUNTY – The New York State Sheriff’s Association Institute begins its annual honorary membership drive within the next two weeks for the state’s Sheriff’s Camp for underprivileged children.
Chenango County Sheriff Thomas J. Loughren said the drive is usually conducted through the mail, but this year’s campaign will involve the county’s Sheriff’s Department.
“The Sheriff’s Department will also be actively soliciting donations this year,” he said, adding that the fundraising campaign is not to be confused with solicitations for the local Sheriff’s camp.
The state camp, located on Keuka Lake, was once used as a YMCA camping facility. “It is a beautiful place,” Loughren said. “We try to send between 10 and 12 boys and girls each year.”
Celebrating its 32nd year in operation, the camp has served roughly 16,000 boys and girls and combines summer recreation with programs designed to educate youth about New York state laws and law enforcement.
The Sheriff’s Institute addresses concerns on a state-level and provides centralized training programs and services for all Sheriff’s offices. The Institute also provides a scholarship at each of the state’s community colleges for a deserving criminal justice students interested in pursing a career in law enforcement.
Financial support for many of the services offered by the institute are derived from honorary membership fundraising drives. Invitations for honorary membership are extended on a nonpartisan basis and the invitees are randomly selected. The institute, created in 1979, is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization and contributions are tax deductible.
Those interested in supporting the efforts of the New York State Sheriff’s Association by becoming an honorary member should contact the Sheriff if a postcard is not received by mail.
