Norwich woman hits jackpot with “Win for Life”
NORWICH – A Norwich woman is $1 million richer today after hitting the jackpot with a scratch-off lottery ticket.
Diane Scheer, a 63-year-old Champion factory retiree, purchased the winning ticket March 13 at the Price Chopper Grocery Store in Norwich. Scheer explained that making the trip to Price Chopper was part of her normal routine. “Whenever I get bored, I go down and do some shopping,” Scheer said. Picking up a “Win for Life” ticket or two, she said, is also part of that routine.
The Norwich woman waited a few hours after she got home before she scratched the ticket and realized she had won the grand prize of $1,000 a week for the rest of her life. The prize guarantees a minimum $1 million pay out.
“I didn’t trust my own eyes,” Scheer said. “I waited for my son to tell me it was real.” Scheer said she waited at least 15 minutes before calling anyone to tell them about her lottery luck, and once she did, no one believed her.
A ceremony was held at the Price Chopper in Norwich to celebrate Scheer’s big win Thursday. Scheer was accompanied by friends and family members as Lottery Spokeswoman Marissa Rodriguez presented her with the $1 million check. Rodriguez congratulated Scheer, saying her luck was proof that “random luck can strike anyone, anywhere at anytime.”
Scheer said she had no definite plans for the money. When asked, the mother of four, grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of one, said, “whenever I want something, I’m going to get it. And I’m sure my kids and grand kids will help too.”
Scheer’s lottery jackpot makes her the seventh Lottery millionaire in Chenango County since 1983, and the fourth in Norwich since 1984. Other Chenango County Lottery winners are Kathleen Fierthaler, of Bainbridge in 1983, Leland Head of Norwich in 1984, Patrick O’Neal of Norwich in 1986, Howard Franklin of Norwich in 1987, Dale Foster of Bainbridge in 1989 and Marc Tucker of Sherburne in 2007.
The New York Lottery was enacted in 1966 to generate revenue for education. In its history the New York Lottery has generated more than $31 billion to help support education.
