Plans made for July's Relay for Life

CHENANGO COUNTY – Team captains and committee members gathered at the BOCES Support Services Center on Tuesday night to discuss the 2008 Chenango County Relay for Life event, planned for Friday, July 18 and Saturday, July 19.
Teams from all over the county gathered to discuss plans for the annual 16-hour walk at the Chenango County Fairgrounds in Norwich. The American Cancer Society event raises money for cancer research and services.
According to the event’s web site, Relay for Life is: “A time and place where people come to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against a disease that touches too many lives.”
Celebrating, remembering and fighting back are three major parts of the relay. The event begins with a celebration. After opening ceremonies, cancer survivors take the field and celebrate their success in the fight against cancer, as they walk the survivors lap. Survivors include individuals who have survived cancer, and those who are still in the fight. A second lap is reserved for survivors and those who cared for them, or are caring for them during their time of need. Once the opening laps are completed, groups of walkers hit the track and begin walking for their team. Each year the event has a different theme. This year’s relay theme will be “Winter Wonderland.”
Another aspect of the relay is remembering those who have lost the fight against cancer. Almost everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer. The Relay for Life gives people the opportunity to remember those individuals during the Luminaria Ceremony. Luminarias can be purchased in honor of someone with cancer or in memory of someone who was killed by the disease. The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after dark. Luminarias are white paper bags with a little sand and a candle inside. The candles are lit during the ceremony to remember and honor those effected by the disease.
In addition to celebrating and remembering those with cancer, the relay also provides people with the chance to fight back. By raising money and making donations to the American Cancer Society, individuals are able to fight one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States. Money raised during the event helps fund research, patient and family programs, advocacy and health education.
So far, 18 teams have registered to be part of the Chenango County Relay for Life, and $8,888 has been raised, but there is still a lot to be done to top last year’s totals, which included 52 teams made up of 900 members raising over $127,000.
Those interested in starting a team can register at the event web site, http://events.cancer.org/RFLchenangocountyNY. Interested parties can also join existing teams, make donations or purchase luminarias on the web. Fundraisers and events will be planned leading up the event.
