Bar Association to honor Wright with Liberty Bell award
NORWICH – Each year, a Chenango County resident is awarded for their efforts put forth to be an outstanding contributing citizen.
This year, the Chenango Bar Association will award James Walter “Jim” Wright the Liberty Bell award on Law Day, May 2.
This annual award recognizes distinguished contributions by non-lawyers to the public’s appreciation and understanding of the law. Wright, a reporter for Binghamton’s Press & Sun Bulletin, is the Chenango County Bureau Chief.
Wright, a Norwich resident, has been in Chenango County courtrooms for many years, and for the past 35 years he has been an active member of the Fireman’s Association of New York state.
Wright is also the independent and professional chronicler for Chenango County local courts’ histories.
“Whether writing about the most terrible murder or soon-to-be forgotten violation, Jim has covered Chenango County courts fairly, accurately, truthfully and thoroughly with unwavering dedication,” said Chenango County Judge W. Howard Sullivan.
“With his words he has preserved the best ideals of his own profession, journalism, and assured that the best ideals of our profession are not neglected by our lawyers and judges,” the judge added.
This year’s award will be presented at 10 a.m. at the county courthouse. According to the judge, it is anticipated that former Sheriff Joseph Benenati will be on hand to hand Wright the award, the same award the sheriff himself received 30 years ago.
