Arts Council hosts Kentucy Derby party
NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts announces its second annual Kentucky Derby Party to be held Saturday, May 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Council’s facility at 27 West Main St., Norwich.
Everyone is invited to put on their “clubhouse spring best” for a traditional Southern celebration featuring mint juleps, a buffet of Southern delicacies, gambling, a silent auction, live music and betting on the Derby race with special “Derby Dollars.” At 5:30, the crowd will be treated to a live viewing of the Derby on a giant screen. Prizes will be awarded for the Best Lady’s Hat and the Most Dapper Gentleman.
Proceeds from the event and auction will help support Council programming as well as the Magic Paintbrush Project. The Magic Paintbrush Project provides facilitated art-based workshops for individuals with developmental or cognitive disabilities, their families and caregivers. The Magic Paint Brush Project originated in Chenango County, and is currently very active in Broome County through the support of venues such as the Oakdale Mall. Project founder Jennifer O’Brien will be on hand at the Kentucky Derby Party to talk about the program as well as offer a hands on experience for those who want to experience the “magic” in the Magic Paintbrush Project. Canvasses and jewelry produced by the Magic Paintbrush Project will be available as auction items.
