New principal at Holy Family
NORWICH – Eugene Chilion, a retired Unadilla Valley school district administrator and teacher, has been named principal of Holy Family School in Norwich, effective July 1.
Holy Family School is a private, parochial school operated by the Catholic Diocese of Syracuse under the auspices of the Catholic parishes of Chenango County. About 147 students attend classes in pre-kindergarten through the eighth grades.
A native of Central Islip, Long Island, Chilion has 35 years of experience in the education field. He holds degrees in secondary mathematics and science from the State University College of Oneonta. He completed graduate work at Oneonta and the College of St. Rose in Albany, and is a certified math teacher for grades 7-12. He received his administrative degree from SUNY Cortland.
From 1999 to 2006, Chilion was a building principal at Unadilla Valley Central School, where he worked closely with the late superintendent Charlie Stratton. A member of St. Theresa’s Parish in New Berlin, he serves as the finance committee chairman and is board president of Chen-Del-O Federal Credit Union in Franklin. He is also a baseball and softball umpire and a certified soccer official.
His wife, Patricia, has worked within the Norwich School District for several years. The couple have three daughters and several grandchildren.
Chilion, who attended Catholic primary school, said the new challenge at Holy Family School would be both spiritual and professional. “I’m not one to sit around in retirement. I like new challenges,” he said.
Outgoing principal Joe Gutosky, who is retiring after seven years, said he expected the transition will be a smooth one. “I am extremely confident that the school will continue to move forward under Gene’s leadership,” he said.
There will be a reception for parents to meet the new Holy Family School principal from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14 at the school, located on 17 Prospect St. in the city. An information evening for existing or interested families is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on June 3 at the school.
