Guilford names Citizen of the Year
GUILFORD – On Memorial Day the Guilford Historical Society awarded the Guilford Citizen of the year 2008 to David Thomas Hubbard, presented by Mary Ellen Parsons. The Honorable Cliff Crouch also presented David the New York State Assembly Citation. David’s contributions to the community of Guilford are many.
Born on Aug. 29, 1942, he is the son of Laura and Archibald Hubbard. David grew up in Guilford and attended Guilford Central School. At the age of 16 he joined the Guilford Fire Department and is still an active member – almost 50 years later. He has served in many capacities including Fire Chief, member of the Emergency Squad and is now a Fire Commissioner. He has been praised and thanked by the many people he has helped throughout the years.
Hubbard is also a veteran, drafted into the Army serving in Vietnam as an airplane mechanic. After the war in 1967 he married Shirley Borthwick. They are known as the Velcro couple - always together helping others. They have three children – Shirley Marie who lives in California with her husband Christopher and their three children Katherine, Jessica and Joshua. Their son Trent lives in Alaska and is working as a Geologist for the State and Teresa a special needs daughter who lives in Oxford.
Hubbard is a member and volunteers for the Guilford United Methodist Church. He was instrumental in helping to coordinate all cleanup and rebuilding of the downstairs of the Church after the flood of 2006. He serves as the Church treasurer and as a trustee. David Hubbard also serves as a member and trustee of the Guilford Historical Society. He is the Chairman of the GHS Veterans Recognition Committee coordinating a very successful Veteran’s welcome home Memorial Day event. He has been the Secretary of the Sunset Hill Cemetery for over 25 years. He is also a member of the American Legion in Bainbridge. His other service includes work as custodian for many of the voting machines in Chenango County.
Hubbard retired as a welder from the Raymond Corporation. He started his own small engine repair business in town many years ago. He is known as the “Lawnmower Man” and taught a small engine repair course at BOCES for several years. He can repair almost any appliance and many people call him “Mr. Fix It.” He is always ready to help locals solve, repair and fix many of their everyday housing problems. He currently works part time at Lowe's in Norwich.
With all of his activities and involvement in the community is it any wonder why David was nominated as Guilford’s Citizen of the year? Way to go Dave, well deserved and congratulations.
