EDITOR’S NOTE: The Bricks & Mortar Report provides updates on major construction projects in Chenango County.
Chenango County Fire Department Tower Project:
• Path studies are still ongoing between the county’s main telecommuncations tower at the Public Safety Facility in Norwich.
• Plans call for microwave installation by August or September.
• The first phase to be completed will be from the Public Safety Facility to Barnes Hill. This will eliminate the leg to former Sheriff’s Office in downtown Norwich. Next will be the path from Barnes Hill to Coventry and Otselic towers, followed by Barnes to Sherburne, Pharsalia and Greene towers and the T1 lines to New Berlin and Sidney.
• Radios and other equipment will be installed as it arrives.
• Emergency Management Officer Matt Beckwith said there will be a 3 to 5 year switch over period for fire department staffs to switch from low band to UHF frequencies. Both will be simulcast during the transition.
Employment stats:
• The Chenango County Office of Employment and Training reported a 6.2 percent unemployment rate in April. The figure compares to 7.0 percent in March, and 4.7 percent in April 2007.
• Chenango County ranks 49th out of 62 counties in the state for having the highest number of workers unemployed.
Housing Starts (modular, double wide and stick built):
• Chenango County Codes Enforcement office reported eight new housing starts in the month of April 2007.
• The towns of Coventry, North Norwich, Preston, Plymouth, Columbus and Afton each had one. There were two in the town of Oxford.
McLaughlin’s facade improvement:
• Contractors recently began the second phase of the department store’s facade improvement project, afforded in part with grants from the New York State Historical Preservation Office.
• Workers installed more energy efficient thermal pain glass to windows on the third floor and began replacing the missing brick ledge between the second and third row of windows.
• Store co-owner Anna McLaughlin said the new ledge would incorporate matching brick and a bluestone sill.
