Mt.Upton fire department to host 86th firemen’s convention

MOUNT UPTON – The 86th Chenango County Firemen’s Convention, as well as the centennial celebration for the Borden Hose Company, will begin with a banquet at 5:30 p.m. June 20 in Mt. Upton.
Festivities will continue through Saturday with a firematics show at about 1 p.m. A large barbecue will take place all day. A plaque dedication will be held, as well as a parade at 5:30 p.m.
“There will be displays and seminars covering the grounds,” said volunteer firefighter Jim Percival, who has been with the Borden Hose Co. for the past 62 years. A mill stone, he said, will be dedicated to the firemen of the Mt. Upton and Rockdale stations, past, present and future.
Borden Hose Co. members say they are thrilled to be able to join their centennial efforts with the annual convention, and the weekend is expected to befun intertwined with education on fire safety. It will also be a time to remember the history of the department, officials say.
“We are looking for participants from every department throughout the county to carry their flag or the American flag and march in the parade. We want all the departments from the county represented,” said Percival.
A book about the history of the company will be available, as well as a book created to cover the years since its charter in 1908 by Borden Hose Co. members.
Dating back to 1908, the Borden Hose Co. was originally started by the workers of the Borden Company to prevent the old factory from fire.
“In the 1970s, the department saw an increase in interested men to volunteer. We had so many volunteers we had to limit membership to 100,” said volunteer Fireman Bob White. “We would have 30 to 40 at each scene.”
The fireman said volunteerism peaked between the 70s and 80s, and it wasn’t until the 1990s that individuals seemed to lose interest in becoming volunteer firemen.
Currently, the 24 hour on-call department consists of 32 members including the firemen, auxiliary and emergency squad.
The hose company is run by five-year renewable contracts with nearby towns and villages including the town of Unadilla, East Guilford, Butternuts, Mt. Upton and Guilford.
Percival said the department has a detailed history outlined, and the books available at the convention cover the past 100 years in both stories and pictures. Included is a history of a large village fire and the flood of 2006.
According to fire department members, participants wishing to take part in the parade, have a display or wanting to help with convention efforts should contact the department at 764-8350.
