Case resigns from Greene post

GREENE – Bill Case, the winningest girls’ basketball coach in Chenango County history, announced his resignation from the Greene Trojans varsity team this week after telling his returning players.
Case, who led Greene team to a MAC league championship and to the Section IV, Class B semifinals in 2008, racked up 427 career wins over 27 seasons. He compiled five Section IV titles, and hordes of division and league accolades. He has placed 16 players on the All-Metro team during his career, more than any other school in Section IV, and nearly twice that many players on the all-Chenango County team.
“I was very close with some of these girls (this year), and some of them are having a hard time with it,” Case said. “I’m having a hard time with it.”
Case served five years at Whitney Point High School as it head girls’ basketball coach, and took over the head girls’ basketball position at Greene in 1986. His second season he led Greene to a Class C sectional title, and his teams won four straight sectional championships from 1993-1996.
Case retired from Greene High School three years ago after serving as its Social Studies department chair, but maintained a half-time teaching position until last year. “This year is really my first year of retirement,” he said.
Retirement, however, last but one year. Citing an opportunity to once again teach social studies full-time and to move closer to his wife Deb’s immediate family, Case recently accepted a full-time position to teach high school Social Studies in Blue Hills, Maine. “It is something different and it seems like a terrific opportunity,” Case said.
Case leaves the Greene basketball program in good stead. Returning is MAC Division One MVP Megan McDermott, and Division One first-team all-stars Barb Borst and Liz Wentlent. Also back is standout starting point guard, Erin Smith. “It was really hard to leave that team, but they should be strong next year,” Case said, who selflessly dismissed the notion the returning crop of players may not produce the same results. “If I’ve done a good job, they will be able to play for any coach. Kids do not play just for a coach, they play because they love the game.”
