Still no deal to re-open landmark Greene hotel
GREENE – A landmark hotel in downtown Greene will remain closed for now, Village Mayor Marcia Miller confirmed Monday.
The Sherwood Inn, located on 25 Genesee St., had been on the radar of a “very interested” buyer for the past few months, said Miller.
“Right now there’s a hold on those negotiations,” she said, declining to elaborate on the details of the deal or the prospective buyer.
The Sherwood’s restaurant closed in the fall. It continued to offer rooms until roughly two months ago.
“We’d love to see it re-open,” added Miller. “It’s a beautiful structure, and it’s such an asset to the village, such an asset to Greene. The possibilities are endless there.”
Owner John Lien could not be reached for comment.
The Sherwood was built in 1913 on the foundation of the Chenango House, which was destroyed by fire in 1905, according to a description on the hotel’s website. The Sherwood would also burn in 1962, and remain closed until 1979. A hotel has been on the site since 1803, the first being Wattles Tavern.
The Sherwood features a total of 30 Victorian and modern era rooms.
