Oxford bicentennial parade looking for floats

OXFORD – Organizers of Oxford’s bicentennial parade July 26 say they are still looking for groups and organizations to participate.
So far 14 floats are signed up, said Oxford Lions Club President Ron Charles Tuesday at a bicentennial committee meeting.
The parade’s theme is “200 Years of Change.” Float participants are asked to model their float after themes from one of the four, 50-year time periods between 1808 and 2008.
“Each section will reflect that era,” said Charles. “(That way) a flowing 200-year history of Oxford will unfold as the parade passes.”
He added: “Don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of the magnificent display of your hometown history.”
Official bicentennial events are scheduled to kick-off later this month, culminating with a weekend-long celebration July 25-26.
Aside from the parade, Civil War re-enactors, American Indian dancers, fireworks, horse rides, dances, concerts, parties, historic walking tours and barbecues are planned, as are a number of other concerts and activities in the month leading up to the celebration. Local and state dignitaries are also expected to be in attendance.
A completed schedule of events should be available for the public in the next few weeks, said committee co-chair Dale B. Leach.
The Oxford Memorial Library has a number of events planned Saturday, July 26 – including a kids fair and several historical presentations and re-enactments – to commemorate phase II of its capital project.
The Oxford Historical Society is also hosting an “Early Living Skills Fair” Saturday, July 19, at the old Oxford Depot where children can learn hands-on what life was like in the early 19th century in Oxford, society President Fred Lanfear said.
“It will be a good time for kids if they show up, kids of all ages,” said Lanfear, adding that there will also be a photo display of the village’s centennial celebration in 1908. “There will be a lot of good street scenes of the village.”
The Oxford American Legion and the Oxford Volunteer Fire Department are also hosting a number of events bicentennial weekend, including a party and a dance, respectively.
Patriotic floats, marching groups, and performers are also encouraged to take part in the parade, Charles said. All participants are asked to submit a brief description of their float or performance prior to the event. There will be a public parade meeting at 7 p.m. on July 15 at ‘6 On The Square’ to go over the route and answer questions.
Bicentennial officials also confirmed Blueox is the primary parade sponsor, with NBT also listed as a major contributor. Tom Emerson will be the parade emcee.
