Outdoor quilt show in New Berlin this weekend

NEW BERLIN – What began as a small showing of a few quilts, the annual outdoor New Berlin quilt show has turned into an event that draws local, regional even national audiences.
The show is planned for Saturday throughout the village. Organizer Linda Foote attributes the event to her love for community as well as her love for quilting.
“It started small,” she explains, “but throughout the past couple of years, it has taken on a true community spirit.”
Many homeowners get involved by hanging up quilts or setting up a display of quilts on their porches or in their front yards. For their efforts, prizes are awarded. “There are Mayor’s and Viewer’s choice awards given each year,” Foote said.
Like in years past, there will be a chicken barbecue, vendors, artisans and entertainment.
Special guests, Bobbie and Joel Bergquist of Quilters Treasure, a New Hampshire business, will be on hand to teach their rare quilting techniques on Friday and Saturday. From marbling and painting on fabric using Tsukineko ink, to making stained glass and “Quilt-As-You-Go” quilt kits, the duo of artists will share how their one-of-a-kind marble fabric is created. “It is a real treat to have them in New Berlin.”
An array of activities will be available throughout the weekend as the quilt show gets underway as early as 10 a.m. Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be an indoor quilt show at Saint Theresa’s Church, along with a chicken barbecue from noon to 2 p.m. Water bottles will be provided by Little Foote’s Preschool.
During the show local churches and organization will be selling craft and other items in the St. Theresa’s lot next to the Masonic Hall from 10 to 3 p.m. Saturday. All money raised will go to the churches and organizations. All churches are welcome to participate and can speak to Carlotta Innello or call 847-9747 to make arrangements.
Singer/song-writer Skip West will be in Hyde Park to provide musical entertainment, including a new quilting song he recently created, and the Utica Zoo Mobile will be there showing exotic creatures.
Quilting groups or shops such as Sew Nice Quilt Shop, Pieceworks Guild and AGR Sewing Center of Brewerton will be showing their work, and Foote said, there are many new artisans this year.
Artisans and/or vendors this year include children’s photographer Ellie Olsen; Susie Miele with Goat Lady Soap; Nadine Kneale with handcrafted jewelry; Shelley Turner with Turner Glass Art; Emily Snyder from Aunt Em’s Gems of Ithaca selling handmade jewelry along with her sister Jill Kraft of Norwich displaying her acrylic landscape paintings; Maggie Alexander from Maggie’s Farm’ and Sunny Side Up Aprons.
The Gazette newspaper’s editor will be at this year’s show to meet residents, give away free copies of the hometown weekly and host a raffle where two people can win a one year free subscription to the paper.
E & B Tee’s Creative Silk-screening with Blair and Ellen Mancuso will be in Hyde Park creating and selling quilting tee shirts and tote bags on site for $10 each.
Foote said each year one of the main aspects of the quilt show is to raise funds for local causes and to reach out to the community.
The Colorscape bus will be parked alongside Hyde Park with promotional items and raffles to win $100 gift card to Golden Artist paint with the proceeds benefiting the annual colorscape festival held in Norwich each September.
The Unadilla Valley Community Schools Quilt Group will have a quilt auction display July 19 in honor and memory of quilting friend Jennie Sherlock of Australia. The students will be collecting donations such as pillows or blankets and the collected items will be on display at Unadilla Valley after the annual show and will be auctioned in October. All money raised will be donated to the local Cancer Society Branch in Norwich.
Keana Schrag will be selling lemonade and cookies Saturday in effort to raise money for the village park project that includes buying new playground equipment for Hyde Park. “She is working very hard to raise the funds needed to complete the project,” said Foote.
Schrag’s fundraising efforts have been matched by the village Mayor and the total will be matched by the Oneonta Wal-Mart for new playground equipment.
In addition to the quilts, food and entertainment the Town of New Berlin Police Department will be on hand in Hyde Park Saturday hosting their annual bicycle safety checks and skills course.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the police will be checking children’s bicycles in the park. Raffles will be available for free and two bicycles, donated by local merchants, will be raffled off at 2 p.m. Raffle winners must be present to win and children are reminded to wear their helmets for the event. Anyone with questions should call the police at 847-8900 for more information.
