Library and Community Center opens

McDONOUGH – McDonough library volunteers scrambled to shelve a few last-minute books on Saturday morning as they waited for the library’s very first patrons to arrive. The much-anticipated library and Calvary Community Center opened its doors for the first time this weekend.
One of the first patrons through the door was library supporter and former McDonough resident Debbie Eldred, who said she felt honored to be there for the occasion. “I hated to see this beautiful church stand in ruin,” said Eldred. After a tour of the newly renovated facility, Eldred browsed the children’s book section with her grandchildren, Evan and Elise.
Also present for the event was Vicki Langer, the 16 year-old holder of library card number 001. Langer has been waiting patiently to use her card for the first time since she received it two weeks ago. Already planning her next visit, Langer paused while checking out her books to find out about the library’s hours of operation.
For the time being, the library will be open just three days a week for limited hours: 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. The community center will be open for special events and available on a rental basis.
According to Library Clerk Judy Lucier, there are projects that need to be finished before the community center and library’s official grand opening celebration later this month. “We’re not letting that stop us,” said Lucier.
A definite date has not been set for the grand opening, but Lucier said it may coincide with a benefit concert scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22. The concert will feature Sliv Bradt’s Country Band, a group of local musicians. All proceeds will go to the library and community center to cover operating expenses and maintenance costs.
The McDonough library is a branch of the Oxford Memorial Library and part of the Four County Library System. It is the first library to be established in Chenango County in more than 50 years.
