Sherburne-Earlville 3, Sauquoit Valley 1
SAUQUOIT – Sherburne-Earlville rebounded from a league loss earlier in the week to beat Sauquoit Valley on the road Thursday.
The Marauders, who lost their starting goalie and sweeper to injury, overcame those misfortunes to grab a 2-1 halftime lead.
“Sauquoit Valley always has a good program, and with our injuries, I was concerned,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “There were times they put pressure on us, but I felt we controlled the game. We moved the ball and passed it extremely well.”
Courtney Jaspar scored her first varsity goal at 8:25 of the first half, and Karli Harris upped the S-E lead to 2-0 just over two minutes later. Samantha Crandall tacked on an insurance goal after SV had closed the margin to one.
The Marauders host Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Saturday at 3 p.m. in the finals of the S-E Field Hockey Tournament.

The unbeaten Trojans needed sudden-victory overtime to extend its mark to 5-0 on the season, Thursday on the road. “Their defense was very good, and (Vestal) plays much better on the turf,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “We tried some different (lineup) combinations, and the second half was played more in our offensive end.”
The end came just 2:45 into the extra period on a perfectly executed penalty corner. Andrea Day made the initial pass to Christine Conroe, who stopped and blasted the ball into the cage.
The Trojans host Maine-Endwell Tuesday.

GREENE – In a showdown of unbeatens, Greene emerged with its record intact after stopping the Blackhawks’ four-game winning streak.
Evan Moxley scored the game’s only goal with 6:32 left in regulation. Moxley popped a hard shot after a crossing pass that slipped past the hands of Oxford keeper Tom Gould.
Curtis Richards made eight saves for Greene, and defenders Mark McDermott, Dan Moriarty, John Kimble, and Eli Marks held Oxford’s prolific offense at bay. “Our four defenders played phenomenal,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “Oxford has some talented kids, and we were able to single-mark them up.”
Greene improved to 4-0 overall.

ONEONTA – Oneonta scored five goals in each half getting two apiece from Matt Arcidiacano and Aaron Foreman in a win over the Tornado Thursday.
Arcidiacano scored on a crossing pass to the far post just 3:30 into play, and Kyle McCue made it 2-0 just a minute later. “We’re not as talented as Oneonta, but we also didn’t fight hard for the ball today,” said Norwich coach John McCumiskey. “We didn’t come out ready to play.”
Norwich plays at Chenango Forks Saturday at 5 p.m.

AFTON – Unadilla Valley won its first game of the season led by Fred Hutchinson’s hat trick in a win over Afton Thursday.
Hutchinson scored at the 12 1/2-minute mark, and added another goal before halftime.
Afton’s Ethan Whitney drew his club to within one goal 10 minutes into the second half after a pass from Corey Westfall.
Hutchinson completed his hat trick and created breathing room with 12 minutes remaining in the game. “It was pretty evenly matched and we moved the ball better today,” said Afton coach Ron Rapp. “They had more speed on the outside, and they took advantage of that.”

Erica DeWispelaere won the battle of first singles players defeating Melissa Campbell, 6-2, 6-3. Oxford did not allow more than two games all told in the other four matches.
The Blackhawks improved to 3-1 overall.

ENDWELL – Jillian Nolan had six aces and 11 assists for Maine-Endwell to lead the Spartans past Norwich Thursday, 25-17, 25-22, 25-13.
Norwich had three kills and two aces from Kayla May. Michelle Testani and Sarah Fleming also had three kills. “We played a very good second set, probably the best volleyball we’ve played this year,” said Norwich coach Paul Sims. “There were a questionable call near the end of the second set, and we were not able to overcome it.”
Norwich hosts Chenango Valley Tuesday.

S-E (1-2-1) picked up its first league win of the season defeating Morrisville-Eaton Monday. Irwin had both goals for the Marauders.
Both of the Marauders’ losses this season have come to unbeaten clubs.
