Greene beats another section champion
Greene 2, Maine-Endwell 1 (OT)
GREENE – Three teams won Section IV titles last year, and Greene, the defending Class A champion, has now defeated the other two.
The Trojans, down at halftime for the first time this season, won their second overtime game getting the game-winner from Erin Smith with 51 seconds left in regulation.
“Maine-Endwell is a good team and our kids had to play well to win,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “Maine-Endwell is solid at every position, and beating teams like Maine-Endwell is how we get better.”
The Spartans scored in transition in the first half after extended Greene offensive pressure. Kelsey Horan’s shot with under four minutes left in the half crossed up Trojans goalie Devyn Staley.
Midway through the second half, Greene answered with the tying goal. Amy David picked up a rebound after M-E goalie Amy Farro made the initial save. David stopped the ball and flipped it into the cage. “(Amy David) was right where she should have been and finished like she should,” Carlin said. “It was the type of play that showed we could finish.”
Smith’s game-winner came in extended action after a penalty corner. She took a pass from Christine Conroe and lifted it into the left corner of the cage.
