Bush arrested again
NORWICH – Just a day after being released without bail on a shooting charge, Lee M. Bush was arrested again Wednesday, this time for marijuana.
The City of Norwich Police Department, responding to a noise complaint, say they discovered Bush, 49, smoking marijuana in his Court Street driveway. He was issued a summons to appear in Norwich City Court for unlawful possession of marijuana at a later date.
Bush was released without bail by Supreme Court Justice Kevin M. Dowd Tuesday. He’d been held on $10,000 bail since being accused of shooting two men with birdshot Sept. 5 as they fled his property following an “alcohol and drug-fueled argument,” according to police.
Assistant District Attorney Stephen Dunshee said he “strongly objected” to Bush’s initial release and was going to petition the court to have him placed back into custody in lieu of “his continued drug use and continued disregard for the law.”
“Less than 24 hours after his release, the defendant was again arrested by police for using drugs,” said Dunshee. In court Tuesday, Dunshee said Bush had been arrested 27 times and convicted of 17 misdemeanors. Dowd granted Bush’s request to have his bail dropped, and released him on his own recognizance.
For the Sept. 5 incident, Bush faces charges unlawfully possessing fireworks, unlawful possession of marijuana, two counts of second degree assault, first degree reckless endangerment and third degree criminal possession of a weapon.
Police said in court that Bush gave a signed statement admitting he shot the two individuals.
He is scheduled to appear before the Chenango County Grand Jury later this month.
