Back to school at Holy Family
NORWICH – New and returning Holy Family School students were greeted by building improvements and new technology as they settled in for the new school year.
Much of the refurbishing was made possible via extensive gifts from the Robert C. Smith Foundation and from parents. They include white floor tiles throughout classrooms, offices and hallways; an elevator; and five SMART boards for instruction and learning. Many other interior and exterior improvements were completed last year, including an expanded library courtesy of a grant from the Dowdall Foundation.
Technology coordinator Ann French said the SMART boards make lessons interactive and keep students focused on lessons. New school Principal Gene Chilion said much of the installation work was completed courtesy of George Carnrike Construction and with the help of inmates from Camp Pharsalia.
Kindergarten students cut out fall leaves to decorate a poem, learned to spell ‘GOD’ and their names, counted to 10, and spent time memorizing Claude Monet’s “Water Lillies” and Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.”
When asked who painted “Water Lillies,” five-year old Gwyneth Kwasnik of Norwich yelled out, “MONET.”
Eighth grader Amanda Off, of New Berlin, said she was happy to be back in school because of “all the new and exciting teachers and activities going on.”
Holy Family School, Chenango County’s only private Catholic school, is operated by the Catholic Diocese of Syracuse under the auspices of the Catholic parishes of Chenango County. Enrollment is about 140 students in nursery school through the 8th grade.
Core course instruction is offered in math, science, English, social studies and Spanish as well as physical fitness, health, computer sciences, art, home and careers, and music. Children of all faiths are welcome.
New school principal Chilion has 35 years of experience in the education field, including eight years as building principal at Unadilla Valley Central School. He holds degrees in secondary mathematics, science and administration and is a certified math teacher for grades 7-12.
