Help the pet overpopulation .. buy mums!
NORWICH – There’s a “cold snap” coming which should remind you that it’s that time again for the 5th Annual CCSPCA SNAP (Spay Neuter Assistance Program) Fall Mum Sale. You can help to solve the overpopulation situation of cats and dogs in Chenango County by buying beautiful chrysanthemum plants at Pires Flower Basket, Rt. 12 in Norwich or Gallery Three-Two-One, 41 State St. in Oxford. Available at both locations during normal business hours. (The gallery’s hours are Tuesday-Sunday, 11 to 5.)
These hardy bloomers are in 8” pots and come in a myriad of great fall colors like yellow, bronze, orange, and burgundy (in every color but blue!). There is no guarantee they will come up every year, but they will hold their blossoms for weeks. Mums are just $6 for one plant, $16 for three, and $30 for six. They’re available now until the end of September or until sold out. Best of all, all proceeds benefit SNAP.
CCSPCA SNAP is dedicated to reducing the number of puppies and kittens born in Chenango County by providing essential financial assistance to pet owners in the cost of spaying and neutering their pets.
Project coordinator Diane Troxell of Oxford began SNAP in May of 2003. She has always been an advocate for spaying and neutering in the community and has been involved with the CCSPCA since 1986, whether as a Board Member or Volunteer. Diane’s approach in helping animals in need is ultimately helping the people who own them. The sterilization of animals needs to be more widely promoted: not just focused on people who can’t afford it. Diane’s goal is to educate people and eliminate the fallacies regarding weight gain in pets and having a first litter as an example, and the #1 reproduction problem to be addressed.
Over 800 pets have been spayed or neutered with the help of SNAP. Since its inception, Compassionate Care Veterinarian, Teresa Mandraccia has done the surgeries on dogs and cats. In 2005, Dr. Robert O’Keefe began doing SNAP surgeries. Their costs which are relatively inexpensive compared to most vets in the area have contributed to SNAP’s success.
Remember to save your redeemable cans and bottles and leave them off at the shelter near the bottle shed. New this year: “Our New Beginnings, LLC” at 5106 State Highway 12 in Norwich (formerly Rainbows End) has agreed to take in redeemables to benefit SNAP. Just mention SNAP and they will credit the CCSPCA’s account.
SNAP is a 501(c)3 charitable organization through the CCSPCA. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent the law allows. For more information contact Troxell at 843-9538.
SNAP assistance is only available to CCSPCA adopted dogs/cats.
