Arcuri becomes first lawmaker to sign the STOP NYRI political pledge

NORWICH – Congressman Michael Arcuri affirmed his opposition of the proposed construction of New York Regional Interconnect by signing the Stop NYRI political pledge in a press conference held Tuesday.
Arcuri, who represents New York’s 24th Congressional District, was the first elected official to sign the pledge.
“I’ve fought tooth and nail against NYRI,” said Arcuri. “I promise to you today to never stop this fight.”
Before signing the pledge, Arcuri praised Stop NYRI for its “tireless efforts” in unifying the opposition against the proposed 190-mile electric transmission line.
He in turn blasted NYRI for “continuing to run roughshod” over upstate communities, calling the potential impact of eminent domain “frightening.”
Although the congressman admitted that his efforts to pass anti-NYRI legislation have fallen somewhat short, he claimed that strides have been made in raising awareness among his fellow lawmakers.
“It’s our job to debunk the myths,” stated Arcuri, citing claims by NYRI that the project will lower utility prices and ease congestion in New York City.
“What they don’t tell everyone is that this will actually increase congestion,” Arcuri said. According to the congressman, NYRI’s plans would worsen the bottleneck in Orange County. “We need to decentralize our energy production rather than centralize it.”
There are so many reasons why this is a bad idea, said Arcuri, and no good reason. “The NYRI project does nothing more than give money to individual investors,” he said.
According to the lawmaker, New York City residents are skeptical about the project as well. “[The people of New York City] understand that this is just a Band-Aid. This is not a solution to the problem.”
When Bradd Vickers, president of the Chenango County Farm Bureau, rose and spoke about the possibility of using natural gas as an alternative to NYRI, Arcuri expressed interest in the proposal. “I think it is something I could get behind,” said the congressman, a statement he qualified by saying he would need to see the details before committing fully.
It is time to “step up to the plate,” said Arcuri, and send a clear message that “we oppose NYRI and we will not let them in our communities.”
