Locals dominate top spots at S-E Invitational

Cross Country

SHERBURNE – Local runners dominated the individual honors, while Oriskany walked away with team titles in boys and girls at the 26th Annual S-E Invitational cross country meet Saturday afternoon.
The Marauders girls, who last laid claim to the top individual spot in 2004, went one-two with Jasmine Huff nipping teammate Sofeia Eddy by less than a second. Huff finished the 3.1-mile course in 22:01.08 and Eddy timed a 22:01.89. “Jasmine felt strong Saturday. She and Sofeia have battled it out, and it’s a friendly rivalry in my opinion,” said S-E co-head coach Anne Geary. It was good for the program.”
Norwich senior Steven Spittler, bidding for a spot on the Section IV state meet team, continued his strong season with a comfortable win on the boys’ side. Spittler crossed the finish line in 17 minutes, 17 seconds, to top his next-best rival by 51 seconds. “Steven’s an awesome runner, and it was nice to have Norwich back at our meet,” Geary said.
Among S-E’s boys, Noah Huff led the contingent finishing fourth out of 33 runners in 18:47. “I felt our boys ran a solid race, and overall we’re happy with the results,” Geary said.
Other top local finishers for the girls were Katrina Daoud of Norwich (4th, 22:51), and Sarah Spittler of Norwich (9th, 24:27)
Sherburne-Earlville faces Waterville Wednesday.

Girls’ Swimming

Norwich 98, Johnson City 87
NORWICH – Competing at home Friday night, Norwich was able to clinch its victory over Johnson City winning the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the night.
Savanna Keator, who was on two winning relays, totaled four victories on the day adding individual firsts in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. Makenzie Williams matched Keator teaming on two winning relays, while capturing the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races. “It was within five points going into the last realy, and the girls knew they would have to work hard throughout each race and finish strong,” said Norwich coach Amanda Downey. “It took a combined effort to beat (Johnson City).”
Adding strong swims in the victory were Krissy Stroh, who dropped 12 seconds off her best time to finish second in the 200 freestyle behind Williams. Taylor Zieno broke the 29-second mark in the 50 free (28.76) to add depth points. “It feels good to get another win,” Downey said, whose club is now 3-3 overall. “I hope we can pick up a few more as the season draws to a close.”
Brooke Ireland (100 backstroke) and Sara Loomis (100 freestyle) notched wins for Norwich, who face Oneonta Friday.

Volleyball

Norwich places second at Chenango Forks
CHENANGO FORKS – Norwich put together its best tournament finish in several years winding up second overall at the five-team Chenango Forks Invitational Saturday.
Coming out of pool play with a 5-3 record, Norwich defeated the host Blue Devils, 25-9 in the quarterfinals, and upended Elmira Southside 25-19 after losing to ES twice in pool play. Maine-Endwell ousted the Tornado in a 2-out-of-3 finals winning 25-23, 25-22.
No individual statistics were available.
“Overall, I was obviously pleased with how we played,” said Norwich coach Paul Sims. “It was probably some of the best volleyball we have played all year.”

Girls’ Tennis

Maine-Endwell 5, Norwich 2
NORWICH – Maine-Endwell may have clinched the STAC Central Division title, but it was the Norwich doubles team of Krissie Collier and Katie Orioli that secured an unbeaten record season record.
Collier and Orioli moved to 12-0 on the season with a 7-5, 6-2 sweep of the Spartans’ Logan Mahlum and Meredith Suwak. The Tornado’s Bryn Loomis avenged a second singles defeat to Natalie Suwak winning in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
