City Codes looks at electric vehicle
NORWICH – The City of Norwich Code Enforcement Office has been using bicycles for in-city travel over the summer months to reduce their fuel spending, but with the winter months rapidly approaching, they are looking at other options for gas-free travel.
City of Norwich Code Enforcement Officer Jason Lawrence is testing out an electric vehicle that resembles a golf cart. The vehicle, created by Club Car, can reach a maximum speed of 25 miles per hour.
“We haven’t bought it yet. We’re just exploring options for going greener,” Lawrence said.
The vehicle generally costs between $10,000 and $12,000, which Lawrence pointed out, is cheaper than a car.
According to the manufacturer’s specifications, the vehicle can travel 60 to 80 miles per charge, and the battery generally lasts for about eight years. The electricity the battery needs to charge is approximately the equivalent of leaving your computer on overnight. “They say the cost works out to about $.0002 a mile,” Lawrence said.
The vehicles are some of the first to be approved as road legal. A dealership in Canton brought the vehicle to Norwich and is allowing Lawrence to test it out.
Lawrence said the cart, like the bicycle, allows him to see a lot more when he is traveling through Norwich.
