CHENANGO COUNTY – On Sunday, Chenango County 4-H members gathered and brought with them steaming crock pots, cheesy casseroles, and younger siblings. The annual 4-H Achievement Day celebration kicked-off National 4-H Week in Chenango County. An estimated one hundred 4-H parents, volunteers and members gathered to recognize clubs and members for their accomplishments throughout the 2007-2008 project record year. Soon after a delicious dish-to-pass meal, the awards ceremony began.
Brian Graham received the Otis A. Thompson 4-H Leadership plaque and Katy Kemmeren received Frank E. Skinner 4-H Leadership Plaque for outstanding project work and demonstration of leadership qualities and abilities throughout their 4-H career. Achievement Plaques are given to 4-H members for outstanding project work and overall accomplishments. Noah Ives was awarded the Warren E. Eaton 4-H Achievement Plaque and Kassie Abrams was awarded the J.C. Estelow 4-H Achievement Plaque for 2007-2008
This year’s Top Promotional Club, Hidden Ponds Horse Lovers Club, received a trophy for their participation in displays and community activities (such as floats and parades) that promote 4-H. The Al and Thelma Evans Top County Fair Club Award went to the club with the most in-depth participation at the Chenango County Fair. The 2007-2008 Recipient club was the Chenango County 4-H Livestock Club
Another exciting portion of the recognition ceremony were the Teen Trip Awards. The Agri-Business Career Conference features opportunities in agriculture and requirements for employment in various agri-businesses. This trip also features seminars and guided tours of the SUNY Cobleskill campus and agricultural facilities. The 2007-2008 winners were Courtney Lewis, Noah Ives, Karl Graham and Shawn Wade. The Capital Days Trip to Albany allows participants to observe our state government process, meet their local legislators and tour the government complex. The 2007-2008 Winners were Justin Wade and Brian Graham (Alternate: Mindy Knowles).
Junior Champion awards were given to Nathan Turrell, Susan Graham and Rosie Stoltman. Winners receive a $100 scholarship to attend 4-H camp next summer. Senior Champion Awards were given to Karl Graham and Noah Ives, who will also receive 60 percent toward the cost of their trip to Career Explorations at Cornell University next summer.
Chenango County 4-H presented 18 milestone awards this year, including a number of outstanding volunteer awards to Rhonda Turrell, Dan Spencer, Dan Bates and Stephen and Susan Tansosch.
4-H Members Noah Ives and Kassie Abrams interrupted the ceremony to give a special award of their own. Members recognized Janet Pfromm, Cooperative Extension ag educator, as the ‘World’s Best Ag Educator’ for her commitment to Chenango County 4-H and numerous animal science programs.
