Late surge lifts Greene past Oxford

Boys’ Soccer

Greene 4, Oxford 1
OXFORD – Greene turned a tight game into a comfortable win, all in the final 13 minutes of play.
Tied with the Blackhawks at one-all, Eli Marks scored at the 32:10 mark to put the Trojans in front for keeps. Mark Day added his second goal of the game and Alex Driscoll polished off the scoring. Two of the final three goals came after cornerkicks.
“We played a really good first half. It was back and forth and we played them tough,” said Oxford coach Jon Rogers. “We just had some defensive breakdowns late in the game. They came with more heart, and you can’t take anything away from them.”
Oxford took a one-goal lead into halftime when Taylor Bates tallied off a Curtis Whitehill pass.
The Blackhawks host their annual tournament Friday. Norwich and Greene play at 5 p.m., and the Blackhawks match up with G-MU at 7 p.m.

Field Hockey

Maine-Endwell 1, Greene 0
ENDWELL – With quality scoring opportunities at an absolute premium, Maine-Endwell solved the scoring riddle with 3:48 left in the game to hand the Trojans (12-2) their first division loss this season.
Alley Sanders sent in a free hit from outside the penalty circle that found the penalty cage after getting a slight redirection from teammate Laura Mastro.
“It was a great defensive battle and both teams played extremely well,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “Alyssa David made some huge plays for us defensively all day, and Andrea Myers played well – really the whole defense did, as did theirs.”
The Trojans, who beat M-E in overtime earlier this season, are now one point out of first in the divisional scoring system. Four points are awarded for a victory and three for a win in overtime. “We will be better for (this game), and now we go undefeated from here,” Carlin said.
Greene is at Owego Thursday.
