Cyclones win two of three

CAMDEN The Norwich Cyclones “C” team raced to a 28-0 lead, and went on to beat Camden, 28-13, last weekend.
Alex Weaver scored two touchdowns in the first half – a two-yard plunge in the first quarter, and a 39-yard return of a Blue Devils kickoff after a Cyclones safety.
Cole Rifanburg reached paydirt on a two-yard TD in the third, with Killian Benedict scoring on a three-yard TD jaunt in the fourth. Benedict added two conversion runs.
Rifanburg also tossed a beauty of a pass play covering 46 yards to Weaver to set up the third Norwich TD. Carter Hubbard also ran for good yardage on the day.
The defense was led by Tyler Roberts, who had a safety and a fumble recovery at the Camden 10-yard line. Trey Muserallo had a fumble recovery with Jordan Vinal, Jon Manwarren, Rifanburg, Calos Ithier and Dan Zieno stopping the Devils.
“B” team head coach Stan Foulds, making perhaps his last coaching appearance at Camden, guided his squad to a resounding 29-0 victory.
On the first Cyclones play from scrimmage, Frank Garcia raced 65 yards to paydirt. He added an 11-yard TD in the third quarter. Randy Stokes kicked two extra points with Landon Cummings adding a conversion run.
Jon Marvin had a field day on the both sides of the ball. Marvin scored two TDs in the second quarter on runs of 54 and three yards. On defense, Marvin had a fumble recovery and led the team in tackles. Collin Fern, Matt Parrella, Jacob Perone, Ethan Kelly, Spencer Stone, Kaiser Clipston, and Stokes stuffed the Blue Devils.
The Cyclones’ “A” team gave up a Camden touchdown with 33 seconds remaining to lose a heartbreaker, 24-20.
Michael Sutton had 144 yards rushing and three touchdowns from the quarterback spot. He also had a point-after run and passed for another extra point.
Norwich trailed 12-7 at the half when Michael Oralls took the second-half kickoff to the Camden six-yard line Sutton’s TD run put the Cyclones ahead 14-12.
With only 33 seconds left in the game and trailing 24-20, Sutton moved the Cyclones 40 yards to inside the 19 of Camden on a pass to Jordan Lockwood before time expired.
Sutton led the Cyclones defense with many tackles; Oralls and Trent Stone were credited with a key fumble recoveries to lead the defense.
The Cyclone “D” team continues to improve each week as they dominated the Blue Devils.
Last Saturday, the Cyclones’ cheerleaders competed in the 27-team Tri-Valley League Cheer Championships at the Utica Auditorium.
The Norwich cheerleaders won the league’s sportsmanship trophy. The C and B squads finished fourth overall, while the A team placed second. The D team competition was an exhibition. The Cyclones will next compete at the state championships in Albany and Oct. 18.
The Cyclones’ “B” team is on the road at Cazenovia for a 2 p.m. Sunday game, while the D, C, and A games will be at home at Alumni Field against Holland Patent with 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. starts respectively. The Holland Patent A team enters the game undefeated.
