Red Cross raising money for National Disaster Relief Fund
CHENANGO COUNTY – The National Disaster Relief Fund is virtually empty, according to Red Cross Southern Tier Chapter Executive Director Cynthia Smith Gordineer, and with disaster relief efforts for the victims of Hurricanes Ike and Gustav still underway, the Red Cross is hoping to raise $100 million by the end of the year.
“In the last 30 days, we’ve opened 900 shelters, served 11 million meals and snacks, deployed 18,000 volunteers and provided mental health services to 80,000 people,” Gordineer said. The combined cost of Ike and Gustav are over $100 million so far, and the Red Cross is still serving 140,000 to 170,000 meals a day in affected areas.
To cover the cost of the disasters, the Red Cross borrowed the money needed to respond, and now they are hoping to raise the money to repay that debt. The slogan for the campaign is “Disasters change lives. You can too.”
“We’re asking people to consider making a donation,” Gordineer said. She explained that the National Disaster Relief Fund provided funding for Chenango County during the flooding of 2006, a disaster that cost in excess of $3 million.
“That funding paid for the flooding in our area when we needed it. It allowed us to get back on our feet,” Gordineer said.
In the Southern Tier Region, Gordineer said, the fund raising goal is $140,000. Anyone interested in making a donation to the Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund can do so by calling the Norwich office at 334-4565, by visiting www.southerntierredcross.org or by mailing a check to the office at 27 West Main Street, Norwich, NY 13815. Donors should designate that the checks are for the National Disaster Relief Fund.
