Christina Jensen to perform with Radio City Rockettes

SOUTH NEW BERLIN – Dancer Christina Jensen of South New Berlin will appear in the dance troupe of this holiday season’s Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular show in Nashville.
The Radio City Rockettes have become not only a fixture in New York, but a Nashville tradition as the troupe makes its seventh annual appearance. The troupe will help celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Grand Ole Opry House’s “A Country Christmas” show.
Jensen, 22, is a teacher and choreographer at the Amber Perkins School of the Arts in Norwich and Vestal. She graduated in May from the University of the Arts in Center City, Philadelphia where she received degrees in dance and performance arts. She said she auditioned for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular just one week after graduation.
The audition was “unlike any audition I’ve every done,” the Unadilla Valley High School graduate said. While standing in line in New York City for two hours prior to a 10 a.m. audition, Jensen confessed that she didn’t think she had a chance.
“There were hundred and hundreds of girls. I feel privileged and honored to have been selected part of the troupe,” she said. “This is the biggest show I’ve been involved in that is most known by people outside of the dance world.”
At 5’4, Jensen is not the 5’8 to 5’10 1/2 inches in height required to be a member of the actual 18 women who make up the precision dance line. However, as a member of the troupe, she will be on stage often in the full-scale spectacle.
Christina is the daughter of Theresa and Don Jensen of South New Berlin. She began dancing with the Amber Perkins School of the Arts at the age of 2 and went on to win several regional and national dance competitions. She is a member of Perkins’ Phoenix Project Dance Theatre, has performed with the Martha Graham Company and Brian Sanders’ Momix, and has appeared in independent films.
The dancer leaves for Myrtle Beach, South Carolina this week to rehearse. To get ready, she said she is exercising at the gym daily, eating healthy and dancing, teaching and creating choreography at her cousin Amber’s studio.
“It’s going to be a lot of work on our bodies for a few months and I need to get my endurance up and prevent injury any way possible,” Jensen said.
The Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular will be performed on the resort’s property at the Grand Ole Opry House from Nov. 14 through Dec. 28. The shows are performed from one to four times on any given day.
The Rockettes have been a legendary force in entertainment, with a rich history. From their memorable USO Tours during World War II, to Super Bowl halftime appearances, to the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade performances, the Rockettes are a national treasure. More than 2.1 million people annually see the women display their precision dance with the same enthusiasm that has become their trademark.
The popular dance troupe first kicked to life in 1925 as the “Missouri Rockets” and made their show business debut in St. Louis. The Rockettes performed during Radio City’s opening night in 1932 and were an instant sensation.
Following the show, Jensen said she would be back in the Amber Perkins School of the Arts’ studios to teach classes and rehearse them for the 2009 recital and competition season, as well as rehearse herself for an undisclosed performance of the Phoenix Project Dance Theatre company.
