Greene ‘wins and moves on’
Girls’ Soccer
Greene 1, Southern Cayuga 0
GREENE – Greene will point to head coach Randy Smith’s credo after Wednesday’s matchup: “Win and move on.”
It was not the Trojans’ typical display of offense, but it was an opening-round playoff win for the number four seeded team in Section IV’s Class C playoffs. “We escaped,” Smith said. “They had nine back in the defensive third, and we could not generate much offense. We did not pass well, and their goalie played great.”
Southern Cayuga keeper Hillary Chidsey stopped three one-on-one breakaways, but was unable to contain the Trojans’ Megan McDermott on what was the equivalent of a broken play.
McDermott scored with 11:16 left in the first half, her 33rd goal of the season, after taking a deflected pass off a Southern Cayuga player’s leg. “Their keeper and their style of play kept them in the game,” Smith said.
Greene will host Delhi Saturday afternoon.

CANDOR – Candor abrupted ended the Storm’s hopes at extending their Class C playoff game to overtime tallying with just 16 seconds remaining in the game.
Kristen Cleveland, who had the Indians’ first two goals, played the ball to the middle for Kaity Wilcox, who then delivered the winning goal. “We played well as a team and had excellent crosses that we could not connect,” said UV coach Chris Bieniek. “We battled from two goals down, we never gave up, and we showed a lot of character coming back.”
Cleveland’s second goal came 5:31 into the second half to provide the two-goal margin.
UV (9-8-2) started its comeback when Samantha Tumilowicz found the net on a long shot outside the 18-yard box less than three minutes after Cleveland’s tally. Kara Collins tied the game at 25:14 picking up a loose ball.

Canastota 3, Sherburne-Earlville 0
CANASTOTA – Losers by a 3-0 count to the Marauders just over a week ago, the Raiders returned the favor in a first-round Section III playoffs win.
“We didn’t go into this game overconfident, for some reason, we didn’t come to play,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “They played extremely well. We had upset them in last year’s playoffs, and I think they remembered that.”
Kim Zehr, Holly Marsh, and Andrea Underwood had first-half goals for Canastota, the first two tallies coming off penalty corners. Overall, S-E had just two shots and one penalty corner, down from the 10 shots and 12 corners it had in the previous meeting. “They came out strong and beat us to every ball,” Cooman said. “What we had been doing well at the end of the season, we didn’t do.”
Still, the Marauders went 6-2-1 over the second half of the season to earn a playoff spot. “People were writing us off midway through the season,” Cooman said. “We turned it around, and I give the girls a lot of credit.”
S-E finishes 8-9-2.
