Pharma bus delivers health care savings

NORWICH – A big orange bus drove into Norwich last week, but instead of delivering people to their destinations, this bus is intended to deliver health care savings to those who need them.
The big orange bus travels around the United States, providing individuals with a clearing house of information about programs available to help with the cost of prescription drugs. “It’s a one stop shop,” said Communications Director for the Pharmaceutical Researchers and Manufacturers Association of America Jennifer Page.
The Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA) has access to 457 public and private patient assistance programs. It has been around for over 50 years, and now the organization is trying to spread the word about what the program has to offer.
“PPA was created to make it easier for patients and care givers to access information about their prescriptions,” Page said.
In the past, information about the different programs was spread out and more difficult to access, but now all of the information is available in one place, making it easier for individuals to determine if they are eligible for help.
Individuals are asked to take 15 minutes to answer a series of 10 questions, including information about income levels and the types of prescriptions they are currently taking. Information on the programs they qualify is printed out, along with the details for registering for the programs.
Since April of 2005, PPA has helped more than 5.2 million Americans with their prescription costs, including 165,000 New Yorkers.
“Our goal is to raise awareness of the program. Now it is more important than ever,” Page said, explaining that with high prices and a poor economy, there has been an increase in the number of people utilizing the program.
There is no limit to how many people can qualify for help with prescription costs. “Each program has different qualifications,” Page said, “but the priority is to help uninsured and financially struggling Americans.”
Although the bus only made a brief stop in Norwich, residents don’t need to visit the bus to determine their eligibility. Page explained that individuals can complete the 10 question process from home by calling 1-888-4-PPA-NOW (1-888-477-2669) or by visiting the web site www.pparx.org.
“If you need help with the costs of your medicine, it’s worth calling the number or going online to see if you qualify,” Page said.
